Organic Acids Testing

Great Plains Laboratory Organic Acids Test: $309

Description:

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of a patient’s overall health with 75 markers.  It provides an accurate evaluation of intestinal yeast and bacteria.  Abnormally high levels of these microorganisms can cause or worsen behavior disorders, hyperactivity, movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Many people with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors.

The Great Plains Organic Acids Test also includes markers for vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and is the only OAT to include markers for oxalates, which are highly correlated with many chronic illnesses.

What Markers Are Tested?

Here are some of the different categories of markers evaluated by this test:

Yeast and fungal markers.  High levels of these markers usually are an indication of a yeast overgrowth or mold toxicity.

Bacterial markers.  High levels can be an indication of dysbiosis.  This section also tests for multiple clostridia bacterial markers.

Oxalate metabolites.  One of the main concerns with high oxalates is a greater risk of developing kidney stones.  Certain foods are high in oxalates (i.e. spinach), but there can be other causes, including an overgrowth of yeast and mold.

Glycolytic and mitochondrial markers.  High values of these markers can be an indication of mitochondrial dysfunction.

Neurotransmitter metabolites.  This section specifically evaluates the phenyalanine and tyrosine metabolites, which in turn can be an indication of imbalances of the dopamine and/or norepinephrine.  It also evaluates the tryptophan metabolites, which can be an indication of imbalances of serotonin, as well as an excess of quinolinic acid, which in turn can be an indication of neuroinflammation.

Pyrimidine metabolites.  These metabolites relate to folate metabolism.

Ketone and fatty acid oxidation metabolites.  These markers relate to fatty acid oxidation.  High levels are common in those following a low carbohydrate/high fat diet, although very high levels can also be an indication of diabetes or mitochondrial dysfunction.

Nutritional markers.  The markers tested under this section include vitamins B2, B5, B6, B12, biotin, vitamin C, and CoQ10.

Indicators of detoxification.  Two of these markers relate to glutathione status, another relates to ammonia.

Amino acid metabolites.  These relate to inborn errors of metabolism, and you want to see low levels of these markers.
