Description:
DUTCH stands for “Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones.” This test offers a comprehensive look at 35 different hormones and their metabolites: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, and cortisol, along with a few urinary organic acids. One of the main benefits of urine testing for the sex hormones is the ability to measure the hormone metabolites.
Estradiol and estrone both lead to the formation of estrogen metabolites, which include 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OH-E1), 4-hydroxyestrone (4-OH-E1), and 16α-hydroxyestrone (16α-OH-E1). The 2-OH metabolite has weak estrogenic activity, and thus is labeled as being the “good” estrogen. In contrast, the 4-OH and 16α-OH metabolites have a greater amount of estrogenic activity. Evidence shows that those with higher amounts of 4-OH and 16α-OH metabolites have an increased risk of developing certain types of cancers.
This test also looks at the circadian rhythm of cortisol by measuring the free cortisol and cortisone levels throughout the day. In addition, it tests for the cortisol metabolites, along with DHEA-S.
